Yusuke Sato
佐藤裕介
Yusuke Sato, born 1982 in Fukushima Prefecture, is a Yajiro-style Kokeshi koujin and the youngest son of the Sato family. At Kijidokoro Sato — a workshop founded in 1901 and now run by four family members — he works alongside his parents and his elder brother Hideyuki. He is the creator of the gradation Kokeshi: dolls painted in flowing color transitions, a form he developed within the tradition of the workshop.

Yusuke Sato, born 1982 in Fukushima Prefecture, is the younger son of a family of Yajiro-style koujin. He works at Kijidokoro Sato, the family workshop founded in 1901, alongside his parents and his elder brother Hideyuki Sato.
He grew up in a workshop where both parents turn and paint — the same environment that shaped his brother before him. Where his training began formally and when he took up the craft as his own path is not documented. What is documented is the result: Yusuke Sato is the creator of the gradation Kokeshi, dolls painted in layered color transitions that move from one tone to the next across the surface of the wood. Within a tradition that prizes continuity, this is a distinct contribution.
Kijidokoro Sato remains one of the few surviving family workshops in the Tohoku region where an entire family — four members, one workshop — keeps the Yajiro style alive. Yusuke Sato is the youngest working link in that chain.
