Ejiko-Kokeshi Kiku – Yajiro Tradition
A baby rests in its basket – sheltered, still, barely visible. The Ejiko form, originally inspired by the wooden carrying baskets in which children of the Tōhoku region were cradled during fieldwork, is here reduced to its emotional essence: protection, warmth, and a sense of being held. This Kokeshi variant has long been regarded as an expression of maternal care – and Yusuke Sato carries that tradition forward with quiet confidence.
The basket is pale, natural Mizuki wood as ground, its grain softly visible. Across it, a generous hand-painted Kiku motif in deep red and green with an orange centre, expressive and boldly rendered. Above and below, dense Rokuro-Moyo bands in red and green frame the basket – fine, even lines that lend both structure and movement.
Nestled inside sits the Kokeshi figure: a round head, closed eyes in the Fuse-me style, rosy cheeks, a delicate mouth. At the crown, a small black topknot – no further adornment, just that single point. The black hairline falls markedly to both sides, with red decorative blossoms along the hairline. The body is wrapped in red and green spiral bands – Rokuro-Moyo that envelops the figure itself and ties it visually to the basket. Still, and at the same time self-possessed.
