Noboru Wagatsuma | 我妻昇

Exclusive Irodori Kokeshi No. 3

This handcrafted Ejiko Kokeshi by artist Noboru Wagatsuma uniquely combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary design language. The compact, rounded form recalls the historical carrying vessels (Ejiko) in which babies were lovingly cradled in the Tōhoku region of northern Japan—a symbol of care, protection, and security.

Wagatsuma-san reinterprets this tradition-rich form, giving it fresh elegance through the combination of classic floral patterns with a modern, minimalist silhouette. The delicate purple colour palette paired with finely painted floral motifs creates a gentle, calming presence that subtly emphasises the symbolic meaning of maternal love and warmth.

Each piece is turned and painted by hand—the affectionate facial features and carefully executed details make this Ejiko Kokeshi a true one-of-a-kind creation. Subtle variations in colour and pattern execution are an expression of the individual creative process and give the doll its own personal character.
