Exclusive Camellia Hat Daruma Ejiko | Natural Wood Kokeshi
Exclusive Camellia Hat Daruma Ejiko | Natural Wood Kokeshi
This exquisite Kokeshi, crafted from fine camellia wood, captivates with its exceptional design, imaginatively shaped hat, and the striking, symbolically rich depiction of a Daruma — traditionally representing perseverance, determination, and good fortune. The untreated bark highlights the inherent character of the camellia wood used. This approach not only adds an aesthetic texture and striking colour contrast, but can also carry symbolic meaning – reflecting a deep connection to nature and the beauty of imperfection, in the spirit of wabi-sabi.
Ejiko Kokeshi are a distinctive form of traditional Japanese Kokeshi dolls, characterised by their compact, rounded shape and the depiction of infants or young children nestled in carriers known as ejiko. Originating from the Tōhoku region in northern Japan, they take their name from the wooden baskets traditionally used to cradle babies.
The Daruma is a well-known symbol in Japanese folk culture, representing perseverance, determination, and the ability to overcome setbacks. When depicted on an Ejiko Kokeshi, the Daruma’s powerful symbolism merges with the nurturing and protective qualities of the Ejiko form. This combination can be seen as a wish for strength, good fortune, and safe growth – especially for children. A Daruma Ejiko Kokeshi is therefore not only a beautifully crafted object, but also a meaningful symbol of hope, resilience, and caring support along life's journey.
