Exclusive Yamiyo Kokeshi | Natural Wood Kokeshi
This beautiful Tama-ire Kokeshi, masterfully crafted from fine camellia wood, impresses with its original, contemporary design, freely movable wooden ring, and the detailed, traditional painting in the classic Togatta style. It represents a remarkable fusion of modern aesthetics with deeply rooted craftsmanship and cultural symbolism. The untreated bark highlights the inherent character of the camellia wood used. This approach not only adds an aesthetic texture and striking colour contrast, but can also carry symbolic meaning – reflecting a deep connection to nature and the beauty of imperfection, in the spirit of wabi-sabi.
A Tama-ire Kokeshi is a playful and rare variation of traditional Japanese Kokeshi dolls. The term Tama-ire (玉入れ) literally means 'ball insertion' or 'ball toss'. This type of Kokeshi is designed with an opening at the top of the head, allowing space for a baby Kokeshi to be placed inside – reminiscent of a basket (ejiko).
The term Yamiyo (also referred to as the 'Yamiyo style') denotes a distinctive artisanal technique: around the waist of the doll, there is a loose-fitting wooden ring, crafted from the same wood as the body. This movable ring adds a unique tactile quality and visual charm to the piece.
