Wagatsuma-san's Tsubaki No. 5 wears a cup-shaped Daruma hat that almost seems to crush the Kokeshi – and yet the face beneath remains completely calm. This tension between above and below, between fierceness and composure, makes the piece one of the most idiosyncratic in the entire series.
The body is painted with floral motifs in Prussian blue. The raw bark base forms the finish – untouched, grounded.
