Wagatsuma-san's Tsubaki No. 7 rises from a massive, rock-like base of natural camellia wood. Above: a slender, soaring figure with floral motifs in luminous pink and purple. Below: raw, heavy wood that seems barely worked – and is all the more powerful for it.

The contrast between the delicate brushwork above and the untamed base below is the principle of this piece.
