The child sleeps. The Kiku blooms.
Wagatsuma-san's Tsubaki No. 11 is an Ejiko – the child sits deep in the basket, eyes closed. The body is painted with a chrysanthemum pattern (Kiku) in red and green: bold, precise, conscious of tradition. The natural base remains untouched.
The Ejiko form is one of the oldest in the Kokeshi tradition. Wagatsuma-san interprets it with the Kiku – a motif that stands for constancy and dignity in Japan.
