Tsubaki-Kokeshi No. 12 | One of a Kind

Bark. Blossom. Knot hole.

Wagatsuma-san's Tsubaki No. 12 grows out of the wood, not beyond it. The base is a natural tree stump – rough, unworked, with a knot hole no tool has made. Above it rises an original form: round head, broad hat, narrow neck.

The painting is restrained and precise. Floral motifs in red and green on light heartwood. The knot hole remains visible – it is not a flaw. It is the face of the wood.

Camellia wood, turned entirely by hand. One of a kind.
