Kijidokoro Sato has stood in the heart of the Yajiro region, Miyagi, for more than 120 years. Hideyuki Sato-san is a third-generation koujin: from cutting the wood to turning, painting and distribution, he masters every step without division of labour. It is one of the few family workshops in Tōhoku where four members work together at the lathe.

This Kokeshi shows a large, round head on a slender, cylindrical body with a slightly flared base. The body is completely covered with horizontal Rokuro-Moyo bands in red, green and black: precise and dense, built up layer by layer on the lathe. The base glows in warm ochre. The face has finely drawn eyes, red cheek accents and a restrained smile: quiet dignity, not sentiment.
