Kokeshi Kendama – Camellia Motif – Yajiro Tradition
Red, green, purple – and the natural wood beneath. For this kendama, Hideyuki Sato chooses a colour language rarely seen in the Yajiro tradition.
The ken – the heart of the kendama – is shaped as a Kokeshi body in the Yajiro style. The Rokuro-Moyo pattern in red, green and purple runs across the conical body in fine, calm lines – a delicate palette that allows the natural Mizuki wood to show through. The two sakazuki are left natural. The base cup carries a hand-painted tsubaki motif – the camellia in red with green leaves, framed by a purple line. No unnecessary stroke. No gesture without intent.
The tama – the ball – is designed as a Kokeshi head. Gentle Hitoe-Mabuta eyes, the faintest suggestion of a mouth, red cheeks and red decorative blossoms along the hairline. The black hair crown ends in green at the top. The expression: quiet, inward-looking.
The kendama fully conforms to the Competition Size established by the Japan Kendama Association (JKA). This makes it suitable not only as a collector’s piece, but also for advanced players who value professional proportions and balance.
