Kokeshi Car: A Bear About to Go into Winter Sleep
This charming Kokeshi car captures the peaceful moment of drowsiness just before the bear hibernates for the winter. With a slightly tilted head and heavy eyelids, the bear appears to be on the brink of slumber. Likewise, the stylishly dressed Kokeshi figurine, wrapped in a chic winter knit outfit, bids farewell for the winter break. In contemporary Japanese pop culture, cute depictions of bears are widespread—whether as mascots (yuru-chara) or anime characters, such as Rilakkuma. Here, the bear represents cosiness, light-heartedness, and childlike innocence, providing a strong contrast to traditional symbolism.
A collaboration between Ivokuma and Takatoshi Hayashi, who create impressive works under the name Strombolies.
